Blogger in Draft adds more link and photo editing options

Even if I don’t particularly like the new Blogger design, there’s no doubt that’s where the new features will be added, as the old version will be eventually retired. For example, I recently noticed two new things added to the post editor, although for now only in Blogger in Draft:

First of all: the option to open links in a new window has been added as a simple check box to the ‘Edit Link’ dialog. It’s a nice small update that can save a lot of time and manual tinkering with the HTML code – and, might I add, WordPress has had this option for some time. I made a habit to have links to external sites open in a new window / tab, because this way the reader can easily return to my article after reading what I referenced. The same thing is valid for large images; overwriting content with other sites or images interrupts the visitor and causes unnecessary delays by loading the original article again when (or if) the reader returns to finish it. But if the linked sites are opened in a separate tab the reader can simply close it and return immediately where he left off. Blogger open link in new window

Sort the new Facebook feed with Recent First

Facebook sort news feed recent firstAbout a month ago, merged the ‘Top news’ feed with ‘Most Recent’ in a single stream, with the top news, well, on top, and the rest of updates somewhere down the page. A pretty confusing and inconsistent setup, if you ask me; I never liked the ‘Top news’ and items served according to some secret algorithm. It looks like recently – I noticed this yesterday – they had a change of heart and added an option for users to sort the feed either by ‘Top Stories First’ or by ‘Recent First’. The small drop-down is located on the top right of the news feed. Unlike the previous design, this choice is preserved from one session to the next and if you are visiting Facebook from another browser. You can also directly access any of the two sort options through a custom URL, for example:

Similarly you can bookmark the custom URL of any of your lists and use it as your starting page for Facebook: each one has an address in the format https://www.facebook.com/lists/<list_ID> and you can find it by simply visiting the list inside Facebook and copying it from the address bar.

Yasushi Inoue - Pușca de vânătoare

in Bucharest, Romania

What’s new in Chrome 16

Right on schedule, six weeks after the previous update, has released the Canary version of to version 17. Unfortunately, version 16 didn’t introduced that many visible features to the browser. Here are the ones I noticed in the weeks I have used it on my Windows PC:

  • As I noticed at the end of the feature list for Chrome 15, beginning with version 16 the extensions have been integrated in the ‘Settings’ page; a very welcomed move in my opinion. I never liked how you had to go through two menu levels to access extensions – or to add a manual link in the bookmarks bar. It felt like they were an afterthought, a secondary feature.
  • Google Chrome 16 new tab buttonThe New Tab button got a small visual refresh: the + sign in the middle of the old button has disappeared and the new button is simply flat, with a subtle glow as you hover on it. You can see the two versions side-by-side in the image to the right: the stable channel in the upper half, the Canary channel below. Could this be another change related by the Google+ brand, like some speculated about the recent removal of the ‘+’-operator from search results?
  • The ‘Bookmarks’ screen on the ‘New Tab’-page has been rolled back from the default browser features; it’s now available only if you activate a command-line flag (“Enable NTP bookmark features”). As I see it, it’s probably undergoing some (background) changes and will not be available in the stable channel very soon. The blog Google Operation System also mentions that new icons for Games and Music have been added to the ‘Apps’ screen, but I didn’t see them in my copy of Chrome Canary.

Larry Niven - Protector

in Bucharest, Romania

A new look for YouTube’s playlist bar

As you probably know if you visit even casually, whenever you visit a playlist – including ‘special’ ones like ‘History’ or ‘Liked’ – the site shows a bar with several controls on the bottom, similar to a mini-music player. Starting yesterday – as far as I noticed – this bar got a new look, with bigger, dear I say more + -like buttons and some minor changes to their location – ‘Options’ was moved to the far right. The video thumbnails also got a facelift, with the video title now occupying the right half of the thumbnail, which looks nicer; of course, that means you will see a lot less previews at once. I don’t think there are any changes feature-wise, maybe except for the fact that you can now hide the previews with a single click – this makes the arrows on the right end pretty much redundant. You can also easily reorder videos: while hovering over a thumbnail, a small gray bar appears; grab it and drag the video to another position. I’m not sure if these two things were available before. YouTube new look for the playlist bar

Given the amount of horizontal space on the playlist bar, I would like to see some other settings added here, for example sharing buttons or the controls to toggle the privacy status. Right now they are hidden away under not very clear menu entries. ‘More information…’ and ‘Edit or delete…’ lead to different pages and I think they could be unified in a single interface, considering there aren’t that many options for a given playlist.

Predicting browser market share - 2011 edition

About a year ago I wrote an article about browser market share and the expected evolution for the coming months, using my own method based on Markov chains. Looking back now at the actual evolution, it’s pretty easy to see the prediction matches the actual trend only for a short while, a couple of weeks at best, then starts to fall behind, to underestimate the growth of and the shrinking market share of Internet Explorer. The forecast is relatively good for on the other hand, even after 6 months, meaning that the launch of version 4 in March didn’t affect the established trend of stagnation, followed by slow decrease. The model itself does tend to underestimate future evolution: it evens out growth and decay until all products on the market achieve an equilibrium. This means it’s not very well suited for long-term forecasts, because on longer time-frames the shifts in browsing behavior will accumulate and significantly deviate from the forecast.Browser market share 2010 forecast vs. actual evolution
