Push notifications for lists and groups in Facebook for iOS

Along with the more significant update for the iPad app, the iPhone version of Facebook’s mobile app has also been bumped up – currently standing at 4.1.1. While not mentioned in the list of new features, I notices a small change on the iPhone: you can now enable push notifications for lists and groups – similar to the desktop version, where you can opt to receive notifications for every new post or posts from friends. You will find the toggle on the top of the page when you visit a group or list that supports this. Apparently push notifications are only available for ‘Close Friends’ (and On by default), although I can’t see any valid reason why it shouldn’t be an option for any list, smart or manual.

Also with this update, rather annoyingly, decided to reset my settings for push notifications on the iPhone, enabling all options, including the sounds and vibration alerts for messages – I had turned off the sounds as I don’t think replying to Facebook notifications should be top priority. I’m not sure if this is because of some OS limitation, but if not, it’s a shady move to say the least. If you also recently updated the app you should double-check this to restore your previous preferences.

    1. Assuming you use iOS 5.1, you should check in the general settings if Facebook is allowed to send you push notifications and what type (i.e. Settings ► Notifications ► Facebook and Settings ► Facebook ► Push Notifications). Other than that... I'm not sure.

  2. I no longer receive push notifications of 'close friends' only. I have all my notifications turned on, but I noticed that I don't have that phone icon that is on the top right to turn on and off, and don't know how to get it back. I tried re-installing the app, but it is still missing. I have not been able to find anybody having the same issue.

    1. Sorry, I can't you help there either... I just checked and I have the phone icon and menu just as before. You can also check your settings on Facebook - on the desktop website that is. I don't receive push notifications either, but I think it's because I turned off Notifications for this list on the site.

  4. To fix Facebook notifications not working, you should go to menu and then move to settings and then scroll down to the list of installed apps. Now, you must tap on Facebook and then select push notifications and then toggle slider next to messages to enable it and then repeat the steps. Once you do follow and apply the steps you would be able to find out the ways to fix it. Just apply the steps and so you would be able to resolve the issues.
