Greg Egan – Carantina

in Bucharest, Romania
Greg Egan - Carantina

Convert your PDF files to Google Docs documents

After months of experimenting, Google Docs has released the OCR feature in the standard web interface: when you upload a document, there is a new check box – unchecked by default - Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents. I first spotted it yesterday, but it wasn’t functional yet. Nothing different happened to the files I uploaded as test and the check box kept disappearing when I refreshed the page. Today it looks much more stable and I was able to try the actual character recognition.Google Docs convert image and PDF files

The results are mixed, as expected. The conversion is pretty fast, at least with small files. Instead of an image or PDF, you now have a document in the dashboard, containing the extracted text and, for PDF files, images of the corresponding original pages. The Download Squad article covering the news points out that if you want to share the original file you have to upload two versions of it, but that’s actually how all uploads to Google Docs are handled: you can either use it as storage or convert to their internal format for editing, with the expected loss of fidelity. What I would like to see instead is an option to perform OCR on files uploaded before the feature was introduced. Right now the only solution is to download and re-upload them with conversion on.Google Docs OCR warning

New Share Buttons for Blogger

As with most news these days, this one arrived courtesy of ’s shared items feature: Blogger introduced a set of five share buttons, including , and , that can be easily enabled for any blog. The article I read does a good job of explaining how to add them, even if you have a customized template, and also shows a couple of extra tweaks, like hiding some of the buttons. The code behind this new feature was added to the template some time ago, maybe since introduced the new template designer. I assumed it was there to power the ‘Share’ feature on the Navbar.Blooger share buttons

Naturally, if you want the share buttons elsewhere on the blog, the code snippet can be added in another section of the template to accommodate that. For example, I wanted to have them on the same line as the labels, at the end of the post and on the right side. In this case, you should search for the line <span class='post-labels'> while editing the HTML template and place the sharing code after the closing </span>, something like the example below. The original template code is gray, the new code is bold:

Philip K. Dick – Visează androizii oi electrice?

in Bucharest, Romania

Upload photos to Facebook from Picasa

A couple of weeks ago I started to organize my photo collection on the PC and decided to give Picasa another try. One of the best features is the automatic recognition of faces and it helped a lot to speed up the work. It still has some small problems; for example it doesn’t seem to recognize faces in photos rotated to match the original orientation of the scene. Another ‘bug’ is that it sometimes suggests a contact for a face when that contact was already tagged in the same photos; I think it’s unlikely a person could appear twice in a single image – excluding photo manipulation or the presence of a mirror. I would also be nice to see an option to help the algorithm make suggestions: if you have an album with photos from a trip you took with a group of friends, you should be able to inform the software about that - something like “only suggest people from this list or group” – and not receive suggestion for people you only knew years later.

After I finished organizing, I wanted to upload a small sample to Facebook. I don’t usually do that, because of the much-discussed privacy concerns, so I was not very familiar with the options I had. Evidently, I didn’t expect a direct option to connect to Facebook in Google software. But I remembered Facebook offers a way to upload multiple photos by email; that would be the simplest way to send photos from Picasa. The software would also take care of the resizing, as Facebook doesn’t allow images larger than 720 pixels. After looking around several menus I found it: on the homepage, visit ‘Photos’ in the left sidebar, click ‘Upload Photos’ and then ‘Mobile Photos’. Your personal upload address appears in a pop-up; it is also here where it can be reset. Any images sent to Facebook this way will land in the ‘Mobile Uploads’ album; they can be moved to a more convenient location afterwards, but this could become tedious if you upload a large number of images.

Alastair Reynolds - Câinii de diamant. Zile pe Turcoaz

in Bucharest, Romania

Ken Grimwood – Replay

in Bucharest, Romania

Personalize your Google homepage with a background image

The Google search homepage has always been a model of simplicity; some even called it “Spartan” at times. Even after iGoogle was introduced, users could easily switch back to the simple interface with an empty background. This week, a now option was added, somewhere between these two: keep the uncluttered look of the standard search page, but personalized with a background image.

The new feature was already active for my account when I checked yesterday, only two days after release, but only on the main .com domain. I played around with it a bit, before settling for one of my own photos, shot a couple of years ago with a Canon EOS 5D. You can choose between photos from your computer, images stored on Picasa Web – your uploads or the ‘Public gallery’ - or the ‘Editor picks’. It’s a little strange that the ‘Public gallery’ doesn’t have buttons to navigate to more photos, because the ‘Featured’ gallery has a lot more. I guess you can use the included ‘Search’ box instead. The ‘Editor picks’ are also very good, including pictures from National Geographic, as well as some simple, monochrome options. There you will also find the images featured in the official announcement. Google search select a background image

Add attribution to a Blogger feed

A couple of days before I read an interesting article – discovered through Louis Gray’s shared items - about the (more or less authorized) reuse of content or, as the author calls it, the “copy-paste society”. I agree that you should take a positive attitude, to continue to create original content rather that spending resources trying to stop such practices. Maybe large companies have the time and money to pursue this goal, but given the huge size of the Internet and it’s growth, it’s unlikely they will succeed in the long run. Even with a small blog like mine, the more popular articles have been reproduced in full on other sites. One of the positive approaches you can take is to make sure that the copied content still has a link back to your site, by adding it to the footer of the RSS feed, for example.

Updated tab handling in Google Chrome 5

As expected, after the work began on the 6th development version of Chromium, the stable channel was also updated for all users and now all supported operating systems can enjoy a stable version of . Besides the usual speed improvements and a number of new features, this version also brings some changes to the interface and especially tab handling.

Chrome phantom tabThe biggest change and a innovation in this area are the new ‘phantom tabs’: closing a pinned tab (via keyboard shortcut, menu command or middle-click) no longer removes it; instead the browser kills the process behind it and releases the memory, but the tab stays on the tab bar with a slightly changed look. If you left-click on this semi-transparent tab the page is reloaded and you can get back to reading it. It works like a temporary bookmark and could prove useful if you regularly open a lot of web-pages and want to free up some memory, while keeping the tabs around. It’s certainly quicker than searching for them through the history. But unfortunately the browsing history is not stored with the phantom tab, so you will not be able to navigate back after you restore that page.
