Pixel Envy: “Exploring the New iWork for Mac File Formats”

Why are file formats important? While it’s unlikely that applications will be wiped off the face of the earth, it might be important for you to ensure that any document created now is readable in the future. If your document is written using an app which saves files in a byzantine proprietary format, you may not be able to recover it in a few years’ time without having access to that same application. Nick Heer

This update to iWork just keeps getting better and better: not only does it remove features for advanced users, it’s also significantly slower and switches to a proprietary file format with no backwards compatibility! This makes it much harder for other apps to handle the files and basically impossible for users to retrieve text inside the files without using iWork. Some have speculated that this change makes it easier to sync files back-and-forth with mobile devices, but that only serves to underline iCloud’s limitations.

For some perspective, the much-hated Microsoft Office made the transition in the opposite direction more than 6 years ago, switching from the closed binary formats (.doc, .xls, etc.) to more readable XML-based files (.docx, .xlsx and so on) in Office 2007.

Charlie’s Diary: “Why Microsoft Word must Die”

Microsoft Word is a tyrant of the imagination, a petty, unimaginative, inconsistent dictator that is ill-suited to any creative writer's use. Worse: it is a near-monopolist, dominating the word processing field. Its pervasive near-monopoly status has brainwashed software developers to such an extent that few can imagine a word processing tool that exists as anything other than as a shallow imitation of the Redmond Behemoth. But what exactly is wrong with it? Charles Stross

There’s a saying among photographers that goes something like a good photographer can make great images with any camera, while a bad one blames his gear for the results. That’s how Charles Stross sounds like here – you can guess what type of writer he is…

But it gets worse: as he openly admits, Stross doesn’t even use Word himself, he’s just complaining that publishers use this format and so he needs to deliver his drafts as .doc files! This whole article smells like flame-bait, beating around an old and tired theme to get some attention. I guess his latest novel doesn’t sell that well…

Daring Fireball: “Thoughts and Observations Regarding This Week’s Apple Event”

That’s all in the past now. My understanding is that it’s been a long slog to get here — here being where these apps and all OS updates are available free of charge — the details of said slog being the sort of convoluted bean-counting that would put anyone who doesn’t wear a green eyeshade to sleep. But this too — I think — is why the iLife and iWork apps are only free with the purchase of a new device and for users of previous versions. Apple’s not trying to milk money from those customers ineligible for the free versions of these apps (although, of course, they will happily keep the money). It’s simply the fallout from Apple’s accounting guidelines that they cannot simply offer these apps free of charge to everyone. John Gruber

Wow, the excuses Apple fans can dig up to justify its decisions! I have worked in accounting for several years and in my experience it’s the accounting that follows business decisions, not the other way around! Maybe it’s different in the US – though I doubt it – but, as long as the business practices are legal, there is a way to reflect this in accounting.

Bishop Fox: “LinkedIn ‘Intro’duces Insecurity”

LinkedIn released a new product today called Intro.  They call it “doing the impossible”, but some might call it “hijacking email”.  Why do we say this?  Consider the following:

Intro reconfigures your iOS device (e.g. iPhone, iPad) so that all of your emails go through LinkedIn’s servers. You read that right. Once you install the Intro app, all of your emails, both sent and received, are transmitted via LinkedIn’s servers. LinkedIn is forcing all your IMAP and SMTP data through their own servers and then analyzing and scraping your emails for data pertaining to… whatever they feel like.

MacSparky: “AppleScript and the New iWork”

It’s concerning to see that this new version of iWork has not only not moved forward on automation but instead backwards. I don’t use a lot of AppleScript in iWork and, frankly, I don’t know what the percentage of people is the do. However, for those people that do use AppleScript, it is huge. David Sparks

The Wall Street Journal: “Might Google Have a Sly Motive Behind Motorola?”

Here’s a theory that I’ve been playing with: What if profits aren’t part of the plan at Motorola? What if Google’s plan for smartphones isn’t to directly make money for itself but, instead, an attempt to destroy money for other companies by making the phone a commodity device?

Farhad Manjoo

That actually sounds like something that New would do – in a sense they’re already trying that with the Chromebooks with little success. But I have a feeling the deal was actually done in a such a hurry that nobody had a chance to make long-term plans. Larry Page made an ‘ego-purchase’ for patents that turned out to be not very valuable; now they’re just trying to find a place for Motorola in a mobile market already dominated by other players who don’t really have Google’s interests at heart.

In Facebook’s walled empire, confusion over privacy still reigns

’s privacy settings have been convoluted and confusing for as long as I can remember; it almost became silently accepted that nobody understands them completely – maybe not even the people building the site! Last week I ran into the perfect example of this on my own timeline, in the form of the post below:

Twitter starts rolling out recommendations in the mobile apps

About a month ago, announced it will start to send users personalized recommendations when multiple people in your network follow the same user or favorite or retweet the same Tweet via its mobile apps on iOS and Android. It looks like this new feature made it’s way to my account as well (one of them at least), with a push notification received earlier today recommending a tweet that got a lot of retweets from the people I follow. Taping the notification will, of course, open up the tweet in the app; curiously, this tweet is not featured anywhere else in the app, in the ‘Discover’ or ‘Connect’ tabs for example. Other people noticed similar notifications, as discussed, naturally, on Twitter. Twitter iOS recommendations via push notification

iOS 7 adoption and future evolution

Despite bringing a radical redesign of iOS, the first in the history of the iPhone, iOS 7 adoption picked off very quickly, immediately making headlines after launch – not that it wouldn’t make headlines anyway. One company even provided a real-time graph of the migration from iOS 6. After the initial surge, things started to quiet down and the adoption slowed considerably. Now, about a month later, the same data shows iOS 7 already installed on 72.5% of Apple mobile devices. In the absence of official data, other reports claim the adoption rate was actually lower compared to the transition to iOS 6 a year ago. In either case, both follow the same overall pattern: very quick adoption in the first few days, followed by steady growth in the coming weeks and months.

Playing around a little with the data available online from Mixpanel, I tried to find a model to fit the available data and make a rough forecast on how adoption will evolve. A linear growth is not really suited for this case, since the data is in percentages and as such the iOS 7 numbers cannot exceed 100. In the past I also used a Markov model to try predicting how the browser market share would evolve, but that one is also a poor fit in this situation; it tends to quickly converge on a stable state, predicting that the two competing versions will stay at the current split indefinitely. Finally I settled on a modified hyperbolic function, under the assumption the iOS 7 will continue to grow slowly until it reaches saturation around 96% – the rest being users on older versions, a situation very similar to before v7 was launched.

And then it would stand again and resume its slow travels, feeling blessed to move free upon this magnificent face.

Stephen Baxter - Return to Titan

in Bucharest, Romania

There was nothing romantic in the view, nothing beautiful about it, not to me. The light was flat and pale. Saturn is about ten times as far from the sun as Earth is, and the sun is reduced to an eerie pinpoint, its radiance only a hundredth that at Earth. Saturn is misty and murky, an autumnal place. And you never forgot that you were so far from home that a human hand, held out at arm’s length towards the sun, could have covered all of the orbit of Earth.

This wasn’t just some dumb invention, some alien equivalent of the probes we had been sending out. The Matryoshka was a different order of machine. Something clever and complex enough to sing to itself. Or, just possibly, to us.

London Review of Books: “Diary”

We have all signed up to wear those earpieces, a future form of new media that will chop our consciousnesses into small dice. Google has made real the interruptors that Vonnegut thought of as a fantasy evil for his dystopian 2081. Google thinks that glasses that interrupt you constantly would be awesome, at least for Google, and they are now in development. I tried on a pair that a skinny Asian guy was wearing in the line at the post office (curious that someone with state of the art technology also needs postal services). A tiny screen above my field of vision had clear white type on it. I could have asked it to do something but I didn’t need data at that juncture, and I’m not in the habit of talking to my glasses. Also, the glasses make any wearer look like, yes, a geek. Google may soon be trying to convince you that life without them is impossible. Rebecca Solnit

I’m certainly not to one to defend Glass, but this article goes a little too far accusing technology of all sorts of negative changes in the society. There is always a tendency to see past times in a favorable light, like a gold standard that we should always come back to, but life and people move on and new generations tend to have different ideas of what’s best for them.

The Wall Street Journal: “Scott Adams’ Secret of Success: Failure”

Let me start with some tips on what not to do. Beware of advice about successful people and their methods. For starters, no two situations are alike. Your dreams of creating a dry-cleaning empire won’t be helped by knowing that Thomas Edison liked to take naps. Secondly, biographers never have access to the internal thoughts of successful people. If a biographer says Henry Ford invented the assembly line to impress women, that’s probably a guess. Scott Adams

And that’s why all those books promising you success overnight are useless – well, to the readers at least, I’m sure the people writing them are pretty happy cashing in on their sales. But do read on, it only gets better after this!

Success caused passion more than passion caused success.

So forget about passion. And while you're at it, forget about goals, too.

The New York Times: “And Then Steve Said, ‘Let There Be an iPhone’”

Remarkably, Jobs had to be talked into having Apple build a phone at all. It had been a topic of conversation among his inner circle almost from the moment Apple introduced the iPod in 2001. The conceptual reasoning was obvious: consumers would rather not carry two or three devices for e-mail, phone calls and music if they could carry one. But every time Jobs and his executives examined the idea in detail, it seemed like a suicide mission. Phone chips and bandwidth were too slow for anyone to want to surf the Internet and download music or video over a cellphone connection. E-mail was a fine function to add to a phone, but Research in Motion’s BlackBerry was fast locking up that market.

Fred Vogelstein

So much for the idea of Jobs being the biggest genius of out times for coming up with the idea for the iPhone! He simply was bold enough to risk the future of the company on this longshot and stubborn enough to see the project to the end despite Apple having next to no experience building phones.

Joe Haldeman - The Forever War

in Bucharest, Romania

Oh, it’s true. I was born in 1975.

Well, god…damn. You’re almost as old as I am. He giggled. I thought that was just something the government made up.

Yahoo Mail updates to catch-up with Gmail and Outlook

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this major update to Yahoo! Mail, after all the changes to Flickr in the recent months, but somehow I am – I think I’m actually surprised by how well it looks, after the previous versions left me unimpressed. There are strong new features (Gmail-like conversations and themes powered by gorgeous Flickr photos, probably the major reason why the new inbox looks so appealing), as well as old Mail Plus features made free for all users (POP3 access, automatic email forwarding, disposable email addresses and extra filters). This move is actually very similar to the recent changes to Flickr Pro accounts, with more features available for free for the general public and higher prices for the ad-free experience – and let’s not forget the 1TB free storage, enough for a lifetime! It’s astonishing how ‘free’ online storage skyrocketed, from 1GB in 2004 to 1TB in 2013, a thousand-fold increase in less than 10 years. Yahoo Mail 2013 update with Flickr background

What’s new in Chrome 31

With its rapid release cycle, updates have never been full of new features or changes; even so, version 31 could stand between them as one of the most uneventful updates. The official announcement for the beta is focused more on the new staff in Chrome for Android, where apparently most of the development is taking place these days – there and in Chrome OS. The desktop version of the browser added a number of new APIs – notably for better autocomplete in online forms – and tools like Portable Native Client, allowing web apps to run at speeds similar to native apps. The other new APIs also help Chrome apps interact more tightly with local data: the Chrome Desktop Capture API allows extensions to capture content on screen or individual windows/tabs; chrome.sessions gives access to recent tabs and browsing history – hopefully enabling developers to build better, full-featured replacements for the New Tab Page; the chrome.fileSystem API allows extensions to read and write entire directories on the hard drive; packaged apps can declare the URL patterns the app wants to intercept and handle, so those URLs will be opened directly in the app instead of the website version.

Alastair Reynolds - At Budokan

in Bucharest, Romania

in Bucharest, Romania

Nota mea: 1.5

Aliette de Bodard - The Weight of a Blessing

in Bucharest, Romania

Benedict Evans: “Dead social networks and the value of history”

Lots of companies have big user bases and big accumulations of user data. And they think that this gives them a lock-in. But maybe the only stickiness comes from the mere presence of users - more like a nightclub than a bank. If your friends move, you'll move in a second, and the dynamics of smartphones mean there are no barriers at all to moving. Owning the address book, and perhaps the photos, are the only real levers of control, and it's very hard to dislodge the underlying platform owners from that. Benedict Evans

Like physical products, social networks seem to follow a classic product lifecycle curve, going through four basic stages, from introduction through growth and maturity to the inevitable decline. Beside basic market dynamics, there seems to be a degree of user fatigue associated with it: as you build up bigger and bigger networks they become increasingly irrelevant, filled with old acquaintances you don’t connect to in real life anymore. It’s a problem no social networks has managed to solve properly – maybe with the exception of Twitter, where you follow people more according to shared interests than to real-life encounters.
