Better plug-in controls in Google Chrome

Sometime between version 7 and 8, added new options for managing plug-ins to the standard browser settings. Next to the usual choices of running plug-ins always or blocking them completely, you get a middle-of-the-road option, ‘click to play’. After a quick search, I discovered the feature was first added in version 6, when it was only available as a command line switch, and then got integrated in the user interface in the next version. In version 8 there are only minor tweaks, improving the description in the settings menu and dropping the info-bar that used to pop up on the top of the page every time a plug-in was blocked.Google Chrome Settings click to play plug ins

Firefox 4 introduces link previews in the address bar

Following the concepts presented more than a year ago, Mozilla has made big and impressive changes to the 4 interface, starting with the tabs, now by default on top, the menus – hidden and replaced with the single app menu – and the add-on manager that now opens in a tab.

Another point on the same list: the removal of the status bar. In the latest beta builds I noticed a new feature that will help bring this goal closer to completion: when hovering over a link, the address is previewed in the address bar, next to the URL of the current page. It’s most likely inspired by the Fission extension, which will probably not be updated anymore, given all of it’s features have been included in Firefox 4 – this extension also merges the progress bar into the address bar, like Safari did at one point. Google Chrome Canary build already up to version 8?

Well, I was planning to write an article about the many new labs features in Google Chrome’s dev and Canary channels. But after I returned home to my personal laptop after more than 2 months, my Chrome Canary browser wouldn’t stop crashing, immediately after starting up. I found that strange, because I didn't have any problems with it on the work laptop, in fact I used it every day – except for the couple of days when an update broke the LastPass login and I had to switch to .

So I went for the universal solution for crashing software: uninstall it and try a fresh install from the Internet. Except in Control Panel, I noticed something unexpected: the version number listed for Chrome Canary was 8.0.549.0 – in the time it took me to fly back from Munich, Chrome launched a new major version! Unfortunately, I can’t say a lot about the new features – I didn’t get to see any because of the constant crashes, both on Windows 7 and on XP. One thing that could be new is a nice desktop notification I got before even starting any of the Chrome versions on the laptop, saying something like “A new version of Chrome is available, would you like to try it now?”. I think it’s built in the updater that runs in the background. I didn’t take a screenshot, but it could pop up later – I expect a new minor version pretty soon to fix all these crashes on Windows.

Brizzly improves web interface before Twitter*

In spite of the increasing competition from the new Twitter web interface, the third-party clients are still alive and well, adding their ideas to the Twitter ecosystem. Today my favorite Twitter client, Brizzly, released an update with an impressive – and much awaited – set of improvements. Like other much more notorious bloggers, I started to write about it on Google Buzz, but soon I began discovering other small changes and switched to a full blog post; besides, Brizzly deserves one. How to add label-specific feeds to Blogger

A couple of months ago I wrote explaining how to add a auto-generated page based on a label to the Blogger standard widget. It proved fairly popular: it’s the most commented post my blog until now, tied with an older one about Google Reader’s “Send To” feature. I complained back then that I didn’t found a way to add the label-specific feed to the page, making it even more like a stand-alone mini-blog. In the mean time I gained more experience with Blogger’s template system and so discovered a way to add these extra feeds.

As most of the advanced tweaks, this will require manually editing the blog template, so it’s probably a good idea to back the original up first. Afterwards head on to the ‘Design’ section in the Blogger dashboard, switch to the ‘Edit HTML’ tab and check ‘Expand widget templates’. Here search for the following line, which is responsible for generating the standard feeds (RSS, atom and comments) on the blog:

<b:include data='feedLinks' name='feedLinksBody'/>

Isaac Asimov – Sfârșitul Eternității

in Bucuresti, Romania

Predicting browser market share

I saw an article some days ago where the author claimed that If the current growth of Chrome will remain at a steady pace for the next few months, […] it will surpass Firefox in around last quarter of 2011. Although I prefer Chrome to other browsers and use it daily, I cannot agree with this assessment, especially since the author doesn’t make his numbers public. Chrome has indeed grown at a steady pace in the last months, but the rate is nowhere near enough to catch up to Firefox until the end of next year. Not there is any guarantee the current growth will continue. And people have been overestimating Chrome’s growth ever since it was launched: this article on TechCrunch predicted it will catch up to Firefox in two years, which obviously didn’t happen.

Nevertheless, the article made me wonder if I could do a better job of predicting the short term evolution of browsers. A linear trend is not really suited in this case: extending it too far into the future will lead to nonsensical results, because market share cannot grow beyond 100% or shrink under 0%. A better representation would be the Markov chain, a model I learned about in college aimed at predicting the evolution of products on a competing market. It starts with a simple assumption: in the next period, a user can either stick with the same product – in this case browser – or switch to one of the others. The probabilities for these actions are summed up in a n by n matrix that can be used to predict future market share or even a ‘steady state’, a market equilibrium, if nothing disrupts the current evolution.
