Connect Quora to Google Buzz

If you’ve got caught up in Quora’s perfect storm, the site itself might not be enough. You probably want to spread the word about it on other social networks, to bring more people in. Quora lets you easily share answers on Twitter and Facebook, but unfortunately Google Buzz users are left out. Which naturally led to a question on Quora: Is there a way to link Quora and Google Buzz?

One answer, as already added, is to subscribe to the (not dead yet!) RSS feed from the Quora profile through Google Reader and then share individual posts to send them to Buzz. Not exactly ideal, since it requires a lot of manual intervention and it looses the ‘real-time’ coolness everybody seems to want these days.

New photo preview in Picasa Web

And on the second Christmas day, another small gift from Google in the form of an update, this time for the photo-sharing site Picasa Web. Specifically, when clicking on the ‘magnifying glass’ to see the full-size version of the image, it now opens in a light box window, taking up almost the entire available space in the tab. This seems to be another work in progress, because the new viewer is triggered only when browsing through photos in an album, but not on the individual photo pages. There images are still magnified inline like before.

The new viewer includes controls to zoom in and out, although having two sets of them – the +/- buttons in the upper left corner and the slider on the right – seems a little redundant. You can also zoom in with by using the mouse scroll wheel. It’s generally an welcomed improvement over the old method, since you can finally take advantage of the entire browser window, but there are some important features missing. You can’t start a slideshow from inside the viewer, nor can you navigate to another picture – there are no controls and the left/right arrow keys don’t have any effect. Not to mention it’s built with Flash, which seems odd, given the number of alternatives based on JavaScript, and that the slideshow feature in Picasa Web manages to work fine without plug-ins. It looks to me like an update to match the recent changes to the Facebook photo viewer, that also introduced larger previews and a light box.

Google Maps experiments with new controls

While most of the world was busy celebrating Christmas, Google Maps quietly started an experiment on the web interface, adding a new way to switch between the views and several layers available. For now, I only see the updated controls in the Chrome Canary build and Firefox beta 4, but curiously not in the stable version of Chrome, making me assume they rely on some HTML5 features not supported in the stable channel yet. Being logged in with a Google account seems to make no difference.

Replacing the buttons in the upper right corner, the new interface combines the main views, ‘Map’, ‘Satellite’ and ‘Earth’, in a single square control accompanied by a collapsed menu below. Hovering over this tile unfolds the ‘Earth’ option to the left and expands the menu to show the available layers – like ‘Transit’, ‘Photos’ and ‘Terrain’ – for the selected view. A nice touch is how the menu updates dynamically to reflect the selected view and location, as not all functions are available in all areas. The frequently used layers are shown right away, while the rest, including the unavailable options, are grouped under a small ‘more’ link.

Peter F. Hamilton – The Evolutionary Void

În ultima parte a trilogiei, Evoluția Vidului, imaginația lui Hamilton se dezlănțuie din nou în spațiu, după lunga poveste cvasi-fantasy din romanul precedent. Încă din primul capitol avem parte de acțiune furibundă și dezvăluiri de mult așteptate despre planul final al facțiunii Acceleratorilor și despre natura flotei de descurajare, care elimină amenințarea combinată a Imperiului Ocisen și Primilor cu ușurință. Însă imediat după aceea, într‑o schimbare neașteptată de situație, flota și întregul Sistem Solar sunt capturate într‑un câmp de forță impenetrabil, similar cu cel care întemnițează Perechea Dyson.

Romanul continuă în general pe aceeași notă, cu răsturnări de situație frecvente și desfășurări impresionante de forțe. Odată ce Pământul și conștiința artificială ANA sunt neutralizate, echilibrul puterii în Commonwealth se schimbă complet. Ilanthe, lidera Acceleratorilor, e liberă să se ocupe de planurile de călătorie spre Vid în noul ei „corp” cuantic, desprins din structura ANA. Adevăratele ei intenții sunt însă diferite de așteptările celorlalți Acceleratori și îi îngrijorează până și printre imperturbabilii Silfeni. Puținele grupuri care i se mai opun – Oscar Monroe împreună cu Gardienii și Araminta, Aaron și Inigo, izolatul Troblum – vor trebui s‑o facă în secret, îndreptându‑se pe diferite căi către Spiră. Acolo s‑a stabilit legendarul Ozzie, de la care toți așteaptă o soluție pentru enigma Vidului. Iar Gore Burnelli, reîncarnat în vechiul lui corp pentru a se putea conecta la visul fiicei sale Justine în Vid, își urmează propriul plan care ne duce pe planeta de baștină a extratereștrilor Anomine, cei care au neutralizat amenințarea Primilor și cea mai recentă rasă care a atins transcendența prin mijloace tehnologice.

New “Watch later” feature for embedded YouTube videos

If you find an interesting article, but lack the time to read it immediately, you can choose from a large number of solutions to save it for later: from generic ones, like browser bookmarks, to tools built specifically for this, like ‘Read It Later’. Now YouTube is experimenting with something similar, only for videos! I noticed the new feature on a video shared in Google Reader: it’s a simple button on the upper right corner, labeled ‘Watch later’. While creating queues was possible on the main YouTube page for years, videos embedded on third-party pages didn’t have that option.

Manage the application cache in Google Chrome

After the recent launch of the Chrome Web Store, another internal page from Google’s browser becomes more useful to the regular Chrome user. Powered by HTML5, some apps can also run offline, by using a local storage separated from the all-purpose browser cache. The page AppCache Internals displays the data stored locally by these HTML5 applications in Chrome and lets users delete the cache individually. It’s address is chrome://appcache-internals/. It can also be accessed from the ‘directory’ of internal pages, which has a much easier to remember address: simply go to about:about and click the first link to open the Appcache page.

A couple of things I noticed about this page:

• As long as you are online, removing the cache will not impact the functionality of the app, because it will be rebuilt immediately by downloading the files from the Internet. Obviously, while offline removing the cache is similar to removing the app: it will become just a dead link, until you connect again;
• Emptying the browser cache doesn’t have any effect on the app cache. As far as I can tell, this internal page is the only place you can manage it;
• There is no ‘Clear all’ button, so removing a large number of offline manifests can quickly become tedious. Ideally, this setting should be added to the regular Clear browsing data… dialog;
• Uninstalling the app doesn’t automatically remove it’s offline data. This could prove useful if you remove an app, but still use the associated website. On the other hand, if you try out a lot of apps and later decide to uninstall them, all the associated data will linger on your hard drive. This could quickly become a new source of hard-to-identify bloat, like data stored by other plug-ins.
• You can also use the page to quickly check whether your apps have offline support. A good idea, especially before starting a trip in an area with poor coverage! As you can see in the picture, only two games have stored data offline, although I have more apps installed. Right now, the number of offline-enabled apps is probably pretty low, but hopefully the Chrome Web Store will become popular and encourage more developers to add these function to their web pages.

Peter F. Hamilton - The Temporal Void

Al doilea roman din trilogie, Timpul Vidului continuă imediat acțiunea primei părți, ca și cum nu ar fi cărți separate. E și asta una din caracteristicile romanelor lui Hamilton, care se observă și la cele două jumătăți ale Stelei Pandorei. Devorarea restului Galaxiei de către Vid e amânată prin intervenția reticentă a Celui de-al Doilea Visător, tânăra Araminta, care se poate conecta empatic cu Lorzii Cerurilor, creaturile care servesc Inima Vidului. Cu această ocazie pătrunde în Vid Justine Burnelli, hotărâtă să întâlnească Inima și să stabilească o formă de comunicare cu ea și o soluție diplomatică la amenințarea Vidului. Experiența ei formează o a treia povestire, de mai mică amploare, alternând cu cele principale de-a lungul romanului și transmisă către întreaga omenire de un nou-apărut Al Treilea Visător.

Dacă în Visul Vidului autorul s-a concentrat în principal asupra Galaxiei și a oamenilor din afară, al doilea roman pune accentul pe evenimentele din interiorul Vidului, cu viața Pășitorului-pe-Apă Edeard în prim plan. Structurate tot în șapte vise, acestea ocupă în jur de trei sferturi din roman. Deși din punct de vedere logic era nevoie de prezentarea aceasta pentru a completa imaginea Vidului, stilistic și în detaliu realizarea lasă de dorit. Am văzut multe recenzii care lăudau introducerea acestui interludiu fantasy drept o idee genială, dar eu am găsit puține lucruri de apreciat. În paranteză fie spus, nici nu cred că termenul de fantasy se aplică în acest context, pentru că nu se invocă nici un fel de forțe supranaturale. Puterile psihice ale oamenilor au o explicație oarecum științifică, fiind o proprietate intrinsecă a structurii cuantice a Vidului. Dovadă că și Justine le capătă, imediat după sosirea în Vid, și sunt chiar amplificate de tehnologia de la bordul navei ei.
