What if Nest is the next Nexus?

Google purchases NestOne of the big news and online discussions in the past weeks centered around Google’s acquisition of Nest, a company building intelligent thermostats – and subsequent sale of Motorola’s hardware business to Lenovo. Many viewed this as another indication that Google wants to be like Apple, joining the rank of hardware manufacturers and vertical integration. Personally I think this is not the case, and Google’s future strategy with Nest – indeed if there is one – is largely an extension of their current way of working together with developers and hardware partners.

The acquisition announcement talks about Google providing scale that Nest couldn’t develop by themselves. But Google doesn’t have the expertise to scale hardware, as we clearly saw from the Motorola acquisition: Google didn’t invest in the hardware divisions and eventually restructured and sold them off to a company better suited to leverage the brand and boost sales. Google probably never had the intention to scale Motorola’s handset business, instead focusing on defending Android with the patent portfolio. What Google does have is a massive scale in software and server infrastructure and I think that’s where they’re heading with Nest as well.

persistent.info: “Finding Messages Explicitly Marked as Spam in Gmail”

tl;dr: Search Gmail for “is:spam -label:^os” to find messages that you manually marked as spam (as opposed to ones that Gmail automatically marked for you). Mihai Parparita

Great insight into Gmail’s hidden labels! Many have been uncovered already over the years, like Superstars and Smart Labels, and other have clear equivalents in the user interface. Besides the more fine-grained classification of spam messages, another system label could prove useful, ^p_esnotif, which marks notifications from Google+. You can search for all your Google+ notifications with the command l:^p_esnotif or create a filter to file them automatically under a label, archive them or whatever else you might want to do.

Chrome’s ‘Reduce Data Usage’ has little effect for regular users

In version 32, Chrome for iOS introduced ‘Reduce Data Usage’, a new feature claiming to reduce your data usage by up to 50%. Chrome is in no way the first to offer data compression – Opera had this for years in both the mobile and desktop versions – and, of course, the savings only apply to browsing done via Chrome, so the overall effect on the data usage should be rather small. Since iOS 7 keeps track of your cellular traffic (you can find this under Settings > Cellular), I did a quick check to see how much data would this feature save for me. I’m not necessarily a representative user and I don’t use mobile Chrome very often, for reasons I have already talked about on the blog, so I expected the actual number to be pretty small.

Aliette de Bodard - The Waiting Stars

in Paris, France

James Joyce - The Dead

in Bucharest, Romania

Gabriel’s warm trembling fingers tapped the cold pane of the window. How cool it must be outside! How pleasant it would be to walk out alone, first along by the river and then through the park! The snow would be lying on the branches of the trees and forming a bright cap on the top of the Wellington Monument. How much more pleasant it would be there than at the supper-table!

Why is it that words like these seem to me so dull and cold? Is it because there is no word tender enough to be your name?

Ars Technica: “New Android OEM licensing terms leak; “Open” comes with a lot of restrictions”

Google now imposes requirements on not only what OEMs load on their devices, but where, with respect to the default home screen icon and widget layout. The terms say "Google Phone-top Search and the Android Market Client icon must be placed at least on the panel immediately adjacent to the Default Home Screen" meaning the search widget and Android market must always be a swipe away from the main page. Google also says "all other Google Applications will be placed no more than one level below the Phone Top"—meaning the app drawer is fine—and requires that Google be set as the default search engine for "all Web search access points on the Device." Google's Network Location Provider must not only be included, but set as the default network location provider; this is no doubt the clause that triggered a lawsuit from rival location company Skyhook. Ron Amadeo

And people wonder why Android is the next target for EU antitrust investigations! Bundling and forcing its own services as default on new devices to the detriment of the competition, using a dominant position in one market (in Europe Android has about 50% market share, much more in some countries) to sustain a near-monopoly in another (in web search Google has almost 95% market share), is what got Microsoft into trouble a couple of years back, in the end forcing them to offer customized versions of Windows in the EU and display the Browser Choice screen.

Facebook LookBack emphasizes its weaknesses

If you use Facebook at all, you probably know by now the company found an innovative way to celebrate its 10th birthday: LookBack, a personalized video meant to highlight your best moments on Facebook. It’s been wildly popular among my friends, with dozens of them posting theirs and effectively flooding my newsfeed for the past day or so. I naturally took a peek at my own and found it bland and repetitive. I can’t imagine going through all my friends’ videos and listening to that same background music over and over. For me, this mass-produced video only served as a reminder of the shortcomings of the world’s largest social network:
